Memorial Day Weekend, Graduations and a Camera

As a photographer some of the best jobs are of the unplanned variety. Recently over the Memorial Day weekend I did a lot of travelling for graduations. Two flights, two states, two graduations, and had a blast making great memories and eating great food. As always, I brought my camera with me and was able to capture some great moments.

Radical Fun at Totally Awesome 80’s Party

Kyle's 30th B-Day Totally 80s Style
Kyle channeling Miami Vice vibes at his 80’s themed birthday party.

“Did you get that?” he asked “If not we got a backup plan. We can do it again.”

This question may be asked of many a photographer with different results. In this particular case I had gotten the shot and it captured the moment. The moment was a group of friends gathered around and in unison they cracked and shot gunned their beers. It happened fast and I snapped away. The occasion was to celebrate Kyle’s 30th birthday. He brought it in with style having a Totally Awesome 80’s themed birthday party in his honor.

Small theater company packs a powerhouse punch

To Kill a Mockingbird

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” – Atticus Finch

On a lazy Sunday afternoon you’d never expect to be completely transported to another time, another place. A place wrought with racial injustices and social tensions. Where a man is not judged by the content of his character, but judged with deep seeded bigotry by the color of his skin.  Common respect and decency is discarded in this era, because of fear.

Celebrating a remarkable milestone birthday

Pagenkopf's 21st B-Day Bash_11 copy

“You have to have a Jell-O shot! Come on, it’s just one!”

Such is life when you’re photographing a 21st birthday party. I chuckled and politely declined to a chorus of bemoaning. This quickly changed to laughter and I had to laugh as well.  The laughter just filled the air. It traveled from room to room, from indoors to the guests outside. Everyone from all ages was festive and mingling and why not? The guests of honor were a set of triplets, Aaron, Natalie and Jessie. Friends, family and extended family were there to bid a happy 21st to these remarkable siblings.

10 things I’ve learned in photography

Hello everyone!

Roger here to talk about photography. When I first decided to officially pursue photography it was a bit daunting. I didn’t have a step by step manual to follow. I didn’t have a direct mentor on how to start a photography business. I had a passion for the medium, a burning desire to get better and the goal of sharing the joy of photography with others. Oh and yeah…and I wanted to get paid too!  Those bills aren’t going to pay themselves.

I’ve learned some things along the way.  From asking the question aperture and f-stops  (Found out I’m not alone this one), to understanding when and where a tripod is an absolute must. It has been quite the experience. But a great one I assure you. The feeling of creating something other people appreciate just can’t be beat. When a client smiles at your work it just motivates you that much more.

Along the way I’ve learned some things about photography. I wanted to share 10 of them with you today. Some of these things may apply to you in your own photography journey.

In photography the things unplanned can be the best opportunities.

Sometimes in life you have to be in the right place at the right time. Recently I had a week which epitomized this thinking and provided great opportunities for photography. I was a part of four wonderful events and only one of them was planned.

It was a whirlwind kind of week and it all started with a friend’s 50th birthday party.

Engagement, Chancing Mother Nature and Laughing Throughout

Sometimes you don’t realize how the little things can turn out to be such a blessing. This was the case with my engagement photo session with Nadine and Dariuss. They had always been complimentary of my photography at family functions then one day they asked me to photograph the two of them before their upcoming wedding. I couldn’t believe it. At this point I had not performed a couple’s session before. They were giving me an opportunity to help capture the love they feel for each other. Once I picked up my jaw off the floor I said yes and we worked out a location and time. I was beyond excited. They took a chance on me and it turned into a lifetime of memories.
