“Did you get that?” he asked “If not we got a backup plan. We can do it again.”

This question may be asked of many a photographer with different results. In this particular case I had gotten the shot and it captured the moment. The moment was a group of friends gathered around and in unison they cracked and shot gunned their beers. It happened fast and I snapped away. The occasion was to celebrate Kyle’s 30th birthday. He brought it in with style having a Totally Awesome 80’s themed birthday party in his honor.

A look at the party decorations at Kyle’s 80’s themed birthday party.

The setup was a mix of 80’s nostalgia. The decorations included records, arcade themed place settings, Rubix cubes, an inflatable boom box and an actual video game console set up with all the classics from the 80’s. Let’s not forget the music. Music from 2017? Pfffft…not today this was the 80’s baby. Kyle didn’t disappoint by having a throwback outfit reminiscent of Crockett and Tubbs from Miami Vice. Other guest in also showed up in styles from this era, or close to it. I saw Axel Rose, Early 80s Madonna, Eazy – E complete with 40 oz, Rakim, A Wall Street cast member and Richard Simmons. The guests really nailed their costumes.

The shot that prompted the question “Did you get it?”

As the party went on into the night you could just feel the positive energy and see the smiles and laughter in everyone’s faces. Besides the video games you had a 80s dating show style contest with your best pick up lines, a freestyle rap-off and a small MC battle. Let’s not forget that Kyle’s birthday cake was Pac-Man themed complete with power pellets and ghost being chased.

I had a lot of fun photographing this event. If only I could’ve finally solved that darn Rubix cube!!!
